This alleged "safety" bill is aimed at the type of food called "Dietary Supplement" in a blatant attempt to undermine your freedom to access high potency vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements which Americans have enjoyed since a unanimous Congress adopted the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). The McCain bill seeks to overthrow major provisions of the current law and force "HARMonization" with international Codex Alimentarius (so-called "World Food Code") restrictions on our food and health freedoms.

NOTE: If you have already taken this Action Item, we encourage you, and every member of your family and circle of contacts to do so again since it has been amended to reflect the passage of HR 2749 on July 30, 2009 after two failed attempts on the previous days, the "mark-up" of the Senate version, S510 in November 2009 and McCain's February 2010 gambit to extend the attack to Dietary Supplements. If passed by the Senate, in any form, the Food Fascism Bill will guarantee the loss of clean, healthy food, high potency dietary supplements and independent farming in the US -- and the complete industrialization of the US food supply. Now the question is what will the Senate do?
We did manage to get some protective exemptions into the House bill for small farmers who sell food directly to consumers or to restaurants, but they are, frankly, weak and will not be enough to protect your food or our farmers. But the Senate bill has much weaker protections, just mentioning minor exemptions for restaurants once and farms twice. McCain's "Dietary Supplement Safety" bill is an obvious attempt to get the stalled (sic) "food safety" show going again.
We need to rally people immediately to submit the below email message to the Senate and to visit with their Senators at home to demand accountable voting on this bill.
The Obama administration is pushing new farm controls which will drive small and independent farmers off the land, literally leaving the field to Agribiz, (implementing all of Codex through complete HARMonization and allowing the FDA to declare Marshal law) through Congress as fast as possible and have coordinated the House bills so there will be no debate and committee meetings are closed. The story will not be the same in the Senate, if we can generate enough public outrage!
Transparency, change, undoing Bush's regulations, giving the public time to comment, grassroots anything? None are visible in the current legislative process. Our entire food system, and thus our health, is being given to the last people with any interest in quality or safety: Big Abgribiz. This is going on in the absence of public scrutiny. Those who do know what is happening, of course, have zero access to the process and to the major media. Meanwhile, the media is absent while Congress is moving at warp speed to sew this up.
There will be no direct, frontal assault on organic farming and dietary supplements, but an insidious process of "infecting" organic farming and nutrient products with regulations, "traceability" requirements, required practices and prohibitions enforced by truly draconian fines and prision terms for even minor offenses running to hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars and 8 years in prison for minor offenses... all under the guise of fake "food safety."
Example: imagine Joel Salatin's wonderful organic farm under the direction of the USDA, with detailed instructions on what he must feed and when, how he must medically "treat" his animals and with what, what he must "spray" and when, ... you get the picture. These bills will industrialize all farms and insure the farmers are forced to buy chemicals and drugs. Organic is dead. As well as human control over the food supply. As well as health.
H.R. 2749 includes a weak exemption for farmer to consumer or restaurant sales because of the Push Back we generated. But the bill has now passed the House and it is imperative that NO version of "food safety" pass the Senate. More Push Back is needed for more protection for dietary supplements, farmers, gardeners, community farming, all local food production (including yours!) and food processing.
We've set up an Action Item for you to send an unmistakable message to your Senators. We must educate the Senate that you value DSHEA, organic farmers and small farming and do not - do not - want independent farmers regulated out of existence. You do not want "Big Agrabiz" regulations applied to organic and small family farms and ranches or to natural/organic food products, including Dietary Supplements.

We also note the language of the Fair Labor Standards Act, 29 USC sec 203 (s) (2) which provides, "(2) Any establishment that has as its only regular employees the owner thereof or the parent, spouse, child, or other member of the immediate family of such owner shall not be considered to be an enterprise engaged in commerce or in the production of goods for commerce or a part of such an enterprise..." Language such as this would be helpful to allay our concerns.If the FDA Center for Food Safety is to be moved into a new Food Safety Agency, then Dietary Supplements, regulated as foods under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) should be included in such agency, with the proviso that such substances, as foods, are deemed safe when used as directed.
We oppose any bill which undermines the provisions of DSHEA and call for extending those protective provisions as has been proposed by Rep. Dr. Ron Paul of Texas. No provision of the fake "Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010" should be included in S510 or adopted individually; we call upon all Senators to refuse to co-sponsor Sen. McCain's bill which threatens our Health Freedom and our rights under DSHEA.

Sen. McCain's (sic) "Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010"
Natural Solutions Foundation, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org, as part of its efforts to educate Congress regarding the inestimable benefits of health and food freedom, has asked its hundreds of thousands of supporters, with many of your constituents, including me, among them, to alert you to our deep concerns for the protection of organic and small family farms and ranches from new legislation and regulation that is more properly applied to large-scale agricultural businesses. The net result of S.510, and any like it, will be to industrialize the food production of the United States with near total loss of small scale, wholesome and community-based farming. This is a loss that neither our society nor our collective health status can afford.
Our concern focuses on legislation to establish a “Food Safety Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services.” This bill is H.R. 2749 which passed the House of Representatives on July 30, 2009 despite intense opposition from the people of the United States. The Senate will soon consider a similar bill. While we do support DIVESTING THE FDA and USDA of their often mis-used food authority, I adamantly oppose the bill which the House passed and strongly OPPOSE S.510 which has even weaker protections for family farms than the House bill. AS MY ELECTED SENATOR, I URGE YOU TO VOTE AGAINST THESE BILLS and any similar substitutes. WE NEED PROTECTION FOR LOCAL, NATURAL AND ORGANIC FOOD AND FOR DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS TOO.
If the Senate insists upon passing these dangerous and ill-advised bills, it is urgently important that you write into these bills specific language protecting organic and small family farms and ranches as well as family and personal food production. These enterprises and all natural products, including organic and natural food products and Dietary Supplements, must be unambiguously exempted from the controls of these bills.
Such products and such farms and ranches are not part of the food safety problem. They are, in fact, the true food safety system. The problem is with mega-farms and agra business facilities.
H.R. 2749 included a weak exemption for farmer-to-consumer or farmer-to-restaurant sales, that is not enough! S.510 has even weaker exemptions!
We, the health and freedom focused eaters of the United States demand that our natural and organic food products, Dietary Supplements and their producers be protected from the increased regulation of food producers provided in these pending bills and any similar enactments.
Thank you for your urgent attention to this matter. Health Freedom is Our First Freedom and I look to you to protect it for all Americans.
While the Senate HELP Committee "marked-up" the bill on November 18, 2009, some minor changes were made offering some small small improvements, but the specific language recommended here is the minimum we must have to protect important citizen interests.

The GMO Food Video

Genetically modified foods - also called Frankenstein Foods - are everywhere and you need to know about them. Only fools would consume something that God did not create. GMO Foods are made by corporations to boost profits. They are not made for the benefit of consumers - they will try to tell you that you will save money. You tell them "Money may be your god, but I worship the God of Life, and I want to eat what He put on the Earth for me to eat. I'll save money on my car insurance, thank you.!" Here's and eductional video that is rather long, but it does cover the whole field of GMO foods very well. Nobody said it would be easy to survive.

The government of Britain launches a new food revolution, urging its citizens to be responsible for growing more of their own food. In other words, do for self. What trouble do the British see in the food chain that they are concerned it can no longer be counted on to feed them in the future? Is this like "... a hint to the wise'? Proposals for national food strategy calls for UK farming 'revolution' in response to climate change and food security
While eating less red meat will help achieve sustainable food production, grass-fed livestock play a role in minimising farming's CO2 emissions, says the Soil Association
Britain must grow more food, while using less water and reducing emission of greenhouse gases, to respond to the challenge of climate change and growing world populations, the environment secretary, Hilary Benn, said yesterday.
"Food security is as important to this country's future wellbeing, and the world's, as energy security. We need to produce more food. We need to do it sustainably. And we need to make sure what we eat safeguards our health," he said.
Launching the government's food strategy for the next 20 years with a speech to the Oxford Farming Conference, he proposed a consumer-led, technological revolution to transform UK farming.
"We know that the consequences of the way we produce and consume our food are unsustainable to our planet and to ourselves," he said. "We know we are at one of those moments in our history where the future of our economy, our environment, and our society will be shaped by the choices we make now."
He said consumers, rather than retailers, should lead by buying "greener" food, wasting less and growing more of their own: "People power can help bring about a revolution in the way food is produced and sold."
Food businesses, supermarkets and manufacturerswould follow consumer demand for food that was local, healthy and had a smaller environmental footprint – just as consumers had pushed the rapid expansion of Fairtrade products and free range eggs in the last decade, Benn said.
The government aims to develop a "meanwhile" lease for landowners and voluntary groups wishing to set up temporary allotments on land awaiting development. One in three people in the UK grows fruit and vegetables, according to a survey commissioned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Ministers believe the move could foster community spirit and skills as well as physical and mental health. The cross-departmental strategy report, Food 2030, also supports farmers' markets to raise consumption of local produce.
But by comparison with the government's own adviser, the Sustainable Development Commission, the report is cautious about changing agriculture, by, for example, reducing the reliance on intensive meat and dairy production.
It acknowledges livestock production is a big contributor to greenhouse emissions but says there is no clear evidence on the carbon footprint of such foods which consumers can use to change their diet. "Not all types of meat have the same impacts, neither do all systems of production," it states; livestock farming could be the only economically productive activity possible in some hilly areas.
Emma Hockridge of the Soil Association said: "Consumers are feeling increasingly confused by the proliferation of diet-related advice doled out by government departments. While it is right we need to eat less meat overall to achieve sustainable food production, red meat, as long as it is from grass-fed livestock, has a critical role to play in minimising carbon emissions. This is because grasslands for grazing represent vitally important carbon stores."
Benn promised £50m for research over the next five years. Much will go to find ways to reduce carbon emissions from soils and rotting waste food, as well as finding ways to grow food with less fertiliser, pesticides and fuel. He did not mention GM foods, even though the government is known to be in favour of making it easier for farmers to grow such crops.
The campaign group Sustain said the report avoided tough issues, such as reducing children's consumption of junk food: "The government's food vision is hardly worthy of the name. The document proposes a series of minor tweaks to our fundamentally unsustainable food system."
Nick Herbert, the shadow environment secretary, told the conference he welcomed "belated" recognition of the importance of increasing food production in Britain. He proposed an ombudsman to rule on disputes between supermarkets and their suppliers. Farmers complain that chains, which control up to 80% of the grocery market, abuse their power.
Ports of call
A review of Britain's ports is to tackle government fears that our vast food imports are too concentrated in a few ports, risking disruption. Although 93% of imported food and drink arrives by sea through nearly 50 ports, much of it comes through just six: London, Dover, Liverpool, Felixstowe, Grimsby and Immingham. Ports are "potentially vulnerable" to storm damage and coastal surges, says the Food 2030 report, and switching in emergencies may not possible if the alternatives do not have the equipment or depth to handle large ships, or are too specialist. Tilbury handles most of our sugar, Liverpool almost all soya, Portsmouth 33% of bananas, and Southampton is the sole port for fresh produce from the Canary Islands.

Frankenstein Monster Escapes!

Frankenstein was a monster created by a mad scientist who wanted to play God with insufficient skills. While he was successful to a point, later on the monster he created got out of control and turned on him. Genetically Modified Organism is what we would call Frankenstein today - GMO for short.

GMO corn, soy bean, rice, wheat, tomatoes, potatoes and more are all the scientific rage. Part of it is of course a genetically modified organism in seed form can be patented. Can you imagine someone claiming to own a patent on life itself? Well you don't have to imagine that at all. Monsanto is out to own all the food in the world with all patent rights so they can charge whatever they want to farmers who will be unable to grow food the old fashioned way - the natural way.

And thanks to a compliant Congress and FDA, you don't have a way of knowing what you are buying. They do not have to label GMO food as GMO. They don't have to tell you, depriving of the right to choose. How do you read the following article? Is the GMO monster on the loose accidentally or on purpose? If it spreads then the filthy genetic contamination will be everywhere and God's created food plants will all disappear. You know, the one's God planted a long time ago in the Garden of Eden to get the whole thing started.

A recent government report states that 1 out of 6 Americans are hungry. We must fix this problem by building a local food system that addresses the goal of ending hunger: one that is just, sustainable and culturally appropriate for our people in all of our cities, towns and hamlets throughout America. We believe that this is the only solution.
We need to take action now in order to build this new sustainable food system.

Back in August, Robert Roberston of the Halsey Street Green Solutions Group who works as a local consultant with CAO on this project contacted Will Allen to help facilitate the building of a 20×48 hoop house. The hoop house will be used to house aquaponics system similar to the one that Will has developed at Growing Power and have been helping organizations build throughout the nation.
On September 5th and 6th, Growing Power along with CAO staffers and other local partners successfully installed the hoop house aquaponics system, composting and worm systems.
Will was very impressed with the organization led by L.Nathan Hare, the Executive Director of the Community Action Organization of Erie County New York. “I think it will be a great use of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding that the organization received. This project has already produced green jobs at this organization. This is the type of green projects that will help grow the good food revolution.” - Will Allen

5)Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage - First grown in the U.S. by Francis Brill of Jersey City, New Jersey in 1840. The earliest market variety we offer. Conical, solid, tightly folded heads are 10-15" tall by 5-7" in diameter and weigh 3-4 pounds. Be careful not to plant too close together. 60-75 days from transplant. 300 seeds per Seed Bank.




6) Stowell's Evergreen Corn - The original strain of this variety was bred by Nathaniel Newman Stowell, born May 16, 1793 in New Ipswich, Massachusetts. After years of refining the strain, Nathaniel sold two ears of seed for $4.00 to a friend who agreed to use it only for his private use. His "friend" then turned around and sold the seed for $20,000 and it was introduced to the seed trade in 1848. His variety is still the leading white variety for home gardens and market growers. Ears grow 8-9" long and have 14-20 rows of kernels, 1-2 ears per stalk, holds well. 80-100 days. 250 seeds per Seed Bank.




7) Reid's Yellow Dent Corn - Old-timer, well adapted to Southern heat and soils, vigorous 6 – 7 ft. plant, 9-10 in. double well filled ears,high protein. Developed by James L. Reid in northern Illinois. This late large reddish corn was crossed with an earlier yellow dent to create the modern Reid’s Yellow Dent. 85-110 days. 300 seeds per Seed Bank.




8) White Wonder Cucumber - Introduced in 1893 by W. Atlee Burpee of Philadelphia who obtained the seeds from a customer in western New York. Fruits are 7" long by 2½" in diameter. Ivory-white at slicing stage and ivory-yellow when past maturity. Excellent eating quality, ideal for pickles or slicing, highly productive even in hot weather. 58 days. 90 seeds per Seed Bank.




9) Yellow Of Parma Onion - A top-quality, late-maturing onion with handsome, golden, upright globe-shaped bulbs. Average size is 1 pound. One of the best for storage. Imported from Italy. 110 days from transplant. 1000 seeds per Seed Bank.

12) Red Salad Bowl Lettuce - Large decorative upright plants with wide leaves that are crisp and delicious. One of our best performers. 13) Susan's Red Bibb Lettuce - Upright growth habit. Curled and blistered leaf edges are tinged with red, dark lime-green leaf centers, fairly wide mid-ribs. Mild flavor. Looseleaf, 50-60 days. 1,750 seeds per Seed Bank.




14) Schoon's Hard Shell Melon - Introduced in 1947 by F. H. Woodruff and Sons of Milford, Connecticut. Very hard shell, great shipper. Almost round 6½" fruits weigh 5-8 pounds. Thick apricot-colored flesh, sweet and highly flavored. Excellent for home and market gardens, keeps well. 88-95 days. 175 seeds per Seed Bank.




15) Green Arrow Pea - An English main crop variety, a standard home and market variety. Medium-size vines grow 24-28" tall. Slim pointed pods are 4-5" long and contain 8-11 small deep-green peas. 16) Fordhook Giant Chard - Introduced in 1934 by W. Atlee Burpee and Co. Broad dark green heavily crumpled leaves with white veins and stalks. Plants grow 24-28" high with 2½" wide stalks. Abundant crops all season and even after the first light frosts. 50-60 days. 200 seeds per Seed Bank.




17) Druzba Tomato - Bulgarian heirloom first offered by SSE member Carolyn Male. Translates as “friendship.” Round 4” fruits are slightly flattened. Heavy set of smooth red fruits. Good flavor, sweet but tart. Indeterminate, 80 days from transplant. 200 seeds per Seed Bank.

19) Jimmy Nardello's Pepper - The seeds for this variety were given to SSE by Jimmy Nardello who lived in Naugatuck, Connecticut until his death in 1983.
